Sharapova beats seeded countrywoman to advance to quarterfinals

Maria Sharapova was able to advance to the next round after a tough straight sets win over No. 7 seed Vera Zvonareva, while No. 2 seed Serena Williams also went through after an even easier win over Alona Bondarenko on Day 4 in Toronto.

Sharapova had no trouble in the first set against her seeded compatriot, but the second set was tough, as Sharapova came back from 4-5 0-15 to win the match with a score of 62 76(3).

Serena was in no danger against her Ukrainian opponent, and easily dismissed Bondarenko with a score of 61 64.

No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva was also on the winner's list, ousting Shahar Peer in three sets, 61 16 64.
