Kuznetsova suffers quarterfinal loss against former Grand Slam champion on Day 5 in New Haven

After escaping jaws of defeat several times throughout the week, No. 1 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was finally ousted by Amelie Mauresmo in three sets on Thursday, while the No. 2 and 3 seeds went through to the semifinals, along with Elena Vesnina.

Kuznetsova suffered a loss to the Frenchwoman after lossing the first set in a tiebreak, winning the second with ease, and losing the third with a similar score to the second set. The final score was 76(9) 26 63.

No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki easily won to Virginie Razzano with a score of 64 63; and No. 3 seed Flavia Pennetta beat qualifier Magdalena Rybarikova, with a score of 62 62.

The other winner of the day was Vesnina, who demolished Anna Chakvetadze with a score of 61 75.
