The Russian had led 3-1 in head-to-head before this match, and the last meeting was nearly three years ago. The Frenchwoman won the match 64 62.
"She played I think one of her best matches and I was not there," said Safina, who undermined a characteristic selection of winners with 12 double faults. "I didn't give myself the chance to play. It was one of those days today and I'll just have to forget it and get ready for Indian Wells."
No. 3 seed Jelena Jankovic had an easier start to her week, as she defeated Monica Niculescu in straight sets, 63 62.
"It was difficult too because the sun was very strong and sometimes I would toss the ball and I wouldn't see it at times. But I served just enough to hold my serve, which was enough for today."
Top seed Serena Williams had a tough start to the tournament, as she won to Sara Errani in three sets, 46 62 60, while older sister Venus, seeded sixth, easily ousted Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 61 61.
No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva was featured in the night match, against Sybille Bammer, and won easily, 75 62.
